The 2018 Canadian World Junior players were found not guilty on all charges. But over a month later, the NHL continues to keep them ineligible, and by doing so, their punishment continues. A lot of people say that's the right thing – that the players' choices and behaviour were immoral by most of society's standards, and so they still deserve some level of punishment for that. That's completely fair. But what is the appropriate punishment for this particular violation of the NHL's morality standards? When considering the answer, it's important not to overlook what's already happened – their 'time served,' if you will. They've already been banned from the NHL for a long time, 19 months and counting. Their last NHL games were in January of 2024, and even if they're reinstated, they might never play in the league again. There's a good chance that no team will bother taking on the distraction and negative attention. Now let's talk about the social price: The players' personal reputations have been obliterated... forever. The judge fully cleared them of all charges, but for a good chunk of the Canadian public, they were tried and convicted a long time ago. These are heavy, heavy prices that have been paid, but the NHL isn't yet satisfied. What do you guys think? Where do you fall on the spectrum between reinstating the players today and banning them for life?
