📚 Just finished reading Chainsawman and I can’t say I liked it or disliked it. I’m completely neutral.
CSM isn’t a story where your expectations of a Shonen see the forefront. It’s always the last thing you’d expect that happens.
It’s like a “what if” that dragged on too long with themes that mislead you into thinking it’ll have more depth & nuance than it actually ends up having.
Then when it doesn’t, you get disappointed or hit a “of course that happens of all things” but then you’re pushed into another cycle with immaculate build up into the most simple minded peak.
This cycle happens again & again but because it’s done so well, it distracts you from the idea that there won’t be a surreal development.
It leaves you only thinking, if Fujimoto wanted to, he could create a true masterpiece; according to the perception of the average person anyways.
But because he does this intentionally, I can only respect it. The reader is being blue balled just like the protagonist.
Some may say this is deranged, some may say it’s true genius.
Regardless, Fair Game, Tatsuki Fujimoto.
