"New Black Cyclones" by @DrMoncrieffe @BlackChampions -- out today from @BloomsburyBooks -- likens the media attention on 3x @LeTour stage winner Biniam Girmay @GrmayeBiniam to the way Major Taylor, the original "Black Cyclone," was portrayed in the 1890s. See excerpt @bikeradar

#OTD Aug. 22, 1893 - Major Taylor, at 14, got to dine w/ his idol, world champ A.A. Zimmerman, who was arriving in Indy to race. He also met "the Millbury wonder" Willie Windle. Taylor saw "no race prejudice" in them, marveling "that men can be champions & still be broad-minded."

Juxtaposition. #OTD Aug. 13, 1899, Major Taylor “rode like a demon” to win 2-mile World Championship race in Montreal. 🚴🏿 Next day, @mtlgazette praised "the colored boy" in a 3½-column wrap-up of the Worlds. A filler item below the story reported “Another Negro Lynched” in U.S.

🥰Luciyan, @YMCAofCM camper & recipient of the cool blue @RideSchwinn bike from this year's George Street Bike Challenge raffle. Champion cyclist Major Taylor was thrilled to join the Worcester YMCA in the 1890s, after he'd been barred from the Y in Indy because of his color.
