Several years ago I adopted a big orange extremely savvy male street cat from my roommate. He liked me but would physically attack other people with some frequency. I loved him dearly. Everything was going great, until one day I whipped myself up into an anxious frenzy about his health. I loved him a lot and wanted to make sure he was healthy. Decided he needed to go to the vet for a check-up. Of course, nobody at the vet could touch him. He would never bite or claw me though, so they had me stuff my cat into a tiny acrylic box so they could sedate him for an examination. Watching him writhe around in there, smushed against all 6 walls, I knew I had fucked up. Relationship never recovered. He still hung out with me sometimes but it wasn't the same. He started hanging out at the neighbors house more. About 2 months later he left the house didn't come back. Put out posters, some people called and said he was at their house. I went and picked him up and brought him back home, but he left again the next week. Didn't put out posters that time. Never saw him again
