This is the peak week of the year for grass spp. in flower. So it’s a great idea if you want to revise your grass ID over next winter, to make a comprehensive collection now, press and mount them properly, than look at them at leisure when there is no other botanizing to be done.

Cypresses (Cupressus spp.) are tricky. They look similar from a distance (e.g. droopy leading shoots) but are easy close up. Just look at the underside of a branch. In C. lawsoniana the scale-like leaves are lined by white wax (left), while in C. nootkatensis they are not (right)

@TRRaju1 They do postdoc, then they find an unrelated technical job that does not require postdoctoral experiences. They are wasting precious postdoc positions while ambitious candidates do not get such positions.

@RichardDawkins Personal feelings have no place in science. But I know few people whose personal feelings had interfered with their attitude towards science and world view because of intense childhood indoctrination.

@RichardDawkins Biology is badly misrepresented by some of the 'smart' PhD biologists. Irony that I have observed is, they believe that soul exist, mind is controlled by something other than brain. They are mental slaves of religions. Thief is in the ship itself. Very ironical and unacceptable

SUPERB article by Jerry Coyne & Luana Maroja. Scientists, publishers & editors should grow a spine & call the bluff of dogmatic adolescent bullies. Skeptical Inquirer bravely stood up when other publishers wouldn't touch it. skepticalinquirer.org/2023/06/the-id…

The problem is not people being uneducated. The problem is that people are educated just enough to believe what they have been taught, and not educated enough to question anything from what they have been taught. 🧠

Trunks can last decades, branches for years, and leaves for months, but flowers? Their time is fleeting. Their short life combined with their delicacy makes them challenging to fossilize. This week we'll celebrate Lagerstätten who triumph with flower fossils. #FlowerWeek #Fossils
