If you’ve never heard of this influential legal litmus test, which grounds modern gun policy in our distant history, check out our latest Substack post.👇🏻

There were a lot of changes to federal gun policies over the past 12 months. We surveyed gun-owning registered voters to see what they think of them.
We found that nearly half of the gun owners we surveyed were unaware of gun policy changes made in 2025.
More education is needed to inform both gun owners and non-gun owners on these important issues. That’s why we’re here.

Two heinous incidents of gun violence took place last weekend half a world apart. The mass shooting during finals at Brown University in Providence, RI, and the antisemitic terror attack at a Hanukkah celebration on Australia’s Bondi Beach together left 17 people dead and injured dozens more. But aside from their unfolding within 12 hours of each other, these tragedies share little in common except for one thing: they both happened in places with relatively strict gun laws.
Why didn’t these laws stop them from occurring? We take a look.

Along with the rest of the nation, we await the facts to come forward in the horrific shooting at Brown University.
But one fact is already clear: gun violence does not discriminate.
We stand in solidarity with the survivors, the families, the Brown community, and all of those impacted by the profound trauma these events inflict.

“[Gun violence] has always been framed as either a ‘gun problem’ or a ‘people problem,’ and that’s been very contentious. I feel like for the first time, we’re looking at gun violence as a ‘both, and’ problem nationally.” —Chris Carita, 97Percent Senior Training Specialist

Many shooters talk about their plans or raise alarms with family and friends, and interventions in those cases can be life-saving. There is strong evidence that red flag laws are effective at preventing gun-related homicides and suicides, and our research shows that they are supported by the vast majority of gun owners.

The case for red flag laws: “It’s very easy to say [the Minnesota shooter] was a monster, but this person was someone’s child who came to be capable of this kind of carnage. That’s a long road, and there are almost always warning signs along the way.” —Chris Carita

At 97Percent, our hearts are heavy with grief today for the victims of the school shooting at Annunciation School in Minneapolis. We stand in solidarity with the families and the entire community impacted by this senseless act of violence.
While the pain is raw, we must also acknowledge that gun violence is not inevitable. It is preventable. Our work is grounded in the belief that there are proven tools and strategies, supported by majorities of gun owners and non-gun owners, that can help avert future tragedies.
We can and must come together as a nation to seek effective solutions that protect our communities—especially our children.
