15 years today since this all started. Who’s been here from day one? I got discovered on MySpace & YouTube as a 12 year old kid from Australia posting songs I was writing and covering on my guitar. I was flown to the US and spent my 13th birthday singing for the CEO of Atlantic Records / Warner Music in New York City. I cut some demos and was thrust into the world of pop music and never looked back. It was my dream. I told my Nanna at the age of 10 I was going to do it. Fortunately my parents supported me and we all moved over. They sacrificed so much for me to shape my life and I will forever be indebted and ever so grateful. I think they thought it would be a 6 month adventure. They were wrong! At that stage, as an ambitious little guy, I said I was moving with or without them! I was navigating a world so foreign and yet so resonant and familiar. Making mistakes, touring the world, learning on the job, signing cool deals, getting caught in shitty ones, graduating high school on tour with a traveling tutor, meeting my heroes, all nighters in the studio. It’s been dramatic and beautiful and I wouldn’t change a thing. I always knew what I wanted to do. I just didn’t expect it to happen so soon. I thought I’d swim, maybe one day for my country, and then pursue music from my 20s onward. It sort of ended up happening backwards. I needed the time away I took to go pursue swimming again. I’m glad I got to pursue the other dream. It shaped me into a much better, stronger, wiser, more considerate, and far more complete version of myself. It was cleansing, a ritual toward manhood and maturity. But I’m so damn glad to be back in this game now. And this time I’m not leaving.
