@TheBigDoink_ Again, I'm 100% with you on that one. The US inherited true greatness and choose evil instead. It's very disappointing. I just don't think China is any kind of example to follow for a huge number of reasons.

Again, I fully share your frustrations with Nintendo, particularly the lack of a virtual console. I just don't think they are singularly evil.

I'm not a big fan of pirated content, but this whole take is ridiculous. How exactly are we supposed to pay the creators when they don't even offer the film outside of Japan? Open up international streaming and watch how fast people open their wallets. Until then, you can't be mad at fans for wanting to see the content.

@nem1AA @OliverJia1014 It's not that it's evil. But it's absolutely baffling for Khara to release an Evangelion special and want it to remain super secret, as if this wasn't something we would all want to celebrate. At some point, you need to consider the wisdom of this decision.

Yeah this is something that I don’t think people outside of Japan really get.
The mentality here is that if something isn’t available through legal or official channels, you shouldn’t have access to it at all.
That’s a cultural difference that’s not going to change.

Seeing a lot on about Japanese and Western fans/otaku arguing about piracy and the availability of work overseas. I don’t think the two sides can be reconciled. It’s a big cultural difference. Anyone who’s tried to talk to Japanese people about copyright before this will know.

@romly2023 This honestly sounds like a weird misdirection. Not providing a service isn't evil. But complaining about the workarounds that those who wish to access these goods have to go through strikes me as very, very odd.

This comes down to a fundamental difference at the soul level. Overseas, anyone who doesn't provide a service is evil, and piracy is totally justified. The audience has the right to control the work, not the creator. Things like mod culture are rooted in the same idea.

But anime and manga is a different, simpler situation. Japan is simply being prideful and obstinate.

@shideX319 Sony's library isn't complete. You still have to deal with the retro market. Also, Yuzu fucked up because they weren't just quietly developing the emulator and you know this full well. I very much share your frustrations with the Big N, but they aren't that dissimilar from Sony.

We single out Nintendo because of their draconian legal team. Sony ignores emulators like PCSX2 or RPCS3. Nintendo actively nukes emulators ( Yuzu, Ryujinx for example), ROM sites, and fan projects. Sony actually lets you BUY digital PS1/PS2/PSP games on the modern PSN store permanently, whereas nintendo acts like the piracy police, locking their legacy games behind a rental subscription instead of selling them

Did you just suggest using a modded system to run games? Congrats, you just described piracy, which perfectly proves the original point! We wouldn't NEED to mod systems or download ROMs if Nintendo just sold their classic games on the Switch eShop.And no, it doesn't apply to everyone. Xbox has excellent backward compatibility where you can digitally buy OG Xbox games right now. Nintendo aggressively sues emulators and shuts down ROM sites while refusing to offer a legal way to buy those same retro games today.

@shideX319 You were talking about hardware, now you're pivoting to software. If you have a modded system, it isn't hard to run the games you want if you're unwilling to fish on the second-hand market. Regardless, all of this also applies to any console manufacturer, so what's the point?

@Nami_lp It justifies it in the sense that we also wish to participate. "Sonny Boy" is one of the greatest pieces of modern art. "Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu" literally allowed me to mourn my father's death properly. Fix distribution instead of blaming those seeking beauty and meaning.
