In 1940, with the threat of a German invasion looming, the British government executed a massive tactical move: they hid the geography. Over 50,000 road signs, milestones, and direction posts were removed nationwide.
The plan was to strip the landscape of navigational guidance, ensuring that if Nazi forces landed, they would be completely disoriented. Without these markers, the British countryside became an unmarked maze, making it nearly impossible for outsiders to locate specific villages or strategic targets without local knowledge.
