Punjab will borrow ₹8,500 crore in the coming 3 months (July–September 2025). The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the loans that the state government plans to raise. As of March 31, 2025, Punjab’s total debt had reached ₹3.82 lakh crore, which is over 44% of the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). It is estimated that by March 31, 2026, the debt burden may cross ₹4 lakh crore meaning every Punjabi would carry a debt of more than ₹1.25 lakh.
