🌪️ Can AI reliably forecast extreme weather? Nature News & Views by @ShrutiNath18 & Tim Palmer: Rapid AI gains in predicting heatwaves, storms & floods — but rare extremes, physical consistency & trust still depend on physics and observations. doi.org/10.1038/d41586… #AI

Very Little Arctic Multi Year Sea Ice and Arctic Sea Ice Volume and Arctic sea ice extent are the lowest on record for the time of year. The first image shows Arctic sea ice volume and thickness through March 18 2026. This is a very dangerous situation, since we're moving out of a La Niña (which is suppressing the temperature) into an El Niño (which will be elevating the temperature). The second image shows Niño-3.4 region temperature anomalies and forecasts, indicating that El Niño will emerge in the course of 2026. From the post 'The 2026 El Nino - update March 2026', at: arctic-news.blogspot.com/2026/03/the-20… via Sam Carana

A study in Advances in Atmospheric Sciences shows that high-resolution ocean models greatly improve simulations of Gulf Stream dynamics and produce a stronger, more realistic AMOC (Li et al., 2026, doi.org/10.1007/s00376…).

Models indicate that as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation weakens, the Gulf Stream drifts northward. Early signs suggest this shift is already underway, and an abrupt change could signal far more serious climate impacts ahead. newscientist.com/article/251826…

Kilometre-scale models improve extreme precipitation forecasts in eastern Qinghai. Su et al. find 1–3 km explicit convection better captures low-level valley flows. Collaboration with Robert S. Plant & Suzanne L. Gray (University of Reading) doi.org/10.1007/s00376…
