Steven Thrasher sued Northwestern University and four top federal officials this week, alleging that Northwestern denied him tenure because, among other things, federal agencies pressured officials to punish his pro-Palestine activism. insidehighered.com/news/quick-tak…

This policy will cause incalculable damage to the United States. Foreign students are integral to the intellectual life of universities and and a critical source of talent in the American scientific establishment. I touch on this in nytimes.com/2026/07/02/opi… I hope the @AAUP, @HdxAcademy, @NASorg will recognize that this threat to the knowledge enterprise is an order of magnitude more important than issues raised in the Vanderbilt-Washington St. Louis report.

The Trump administration is scrapping a decades-old policy that has allowed international students and exchange visitors to remain in the US for as long as their studies last, replacing it with a four-year limit. Read more: bloom.bg/4aW0GRt 📷: Sophie Park/Bloomberg

The legal battle for the soul of higher education in Texas starts today. Today, AAUP Texas and AAUP-AFT filed suit against Texas Tech University System, challenging policies that restrict what faculty can teach about race, gender, and sexuality. We didn't choose this fight, but it is one we will wage—for higher education, for our students, for our society, and for the truth. Academic freedom belongs to everyone. And it is worth defending. aaup.org/news/aaup-texa… #AcademicFreedom #HigherEd #TexasTech #AAUP

A major victory for academic freedom. The 11th Circuit has struck down the higher education provisions of Florida's "Stop W.O.K.E. Act," reaffirming that the government cannot dictate what professors may teach or which ideas students may consider. Classrooms are places for inquiry—not state-approved thought. This ruling is a reminder that the First Amendment protects the free exchange of ideas, especially on our public campuses. Up next? Texas! aclu.org/press-releases… #AcademicFreedom #FreeSpeech #HigherEd #FirstAmendment
