Dear photographer,
I know you want the best gear, the R5, the RF 85mm f1.2 and all of that. I get it, we all do. But the truth is, some of you have no business owning those yet.
That camera body and lens alone is around 9–10M. Meanwhile, some of your businesses cannot even confidently generate that amount in profit in a full calendar year. That’s a mismatch.
Buy the level your business can comfortably sustain. Grow into your gear, don’t force your way into it.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with using solid, basic gear and delivering excellent results. In fact, clients care more about your output than the price tag of what you used.
Rent high-end gear when the job demands it. That’s what rentals are for. That’s how smart photographers scale, not by tying down all their capital in equipment that won’t pay itself off anytime soon.
Using a 10M setup for a second shooting job where you’re getting paid less than 300k is not just unnecessary, it’s poor business.
And also, you have a life to live outside photography. Don’t go around pouring all your money into gear while neglecting your real life responsibilities, your comfort, your growth, and your experiences. Gear is important, but it’s not your entire life.
Focus on:
• Building your skill
• Building your brand
• Building consistent income
Then upgrade with intention, not pressure.
Gear doesn’t make you a top photographer. Your eye, your consistency, and your business sense do.
Play the long game.
