🚨Despite 53% of UK teenagers knowing a stroke survivor, 40% don’t know calling 999 is the first thing you should do if someone is having a stroke. And over half of UK teenagers were unaware of the FAST acronym. #PassFASTon this #WorldStrokeDay and you could save a life #WSD2022

Today I did a thing I'd been waiting to do since covid stopped us conferencing, & delivered a session at the #Stroke Group Network Conference. Online was harder than the face-to-face session I was in last week, but managed to only lose my place twice - counting that as a win😃

Brain cells send messages around the brain. But when they are starved of oxygen, they die. And although the affected area remains dead. The brain can form new connections that bypass the affected area. This process of re-wiring is called neuroplasticity: bit.ly/3tJcYUK

In tonight's #Emmerdale we saw Rhona save Marlon from choking. Swallowing problems are very common after a stroke. Almost half of people who have a stroke will have swallowing problems at first. Read more about the signs and tips to manage: bit.ly/3xBJjQJ

Tonight in #Emmerdale, we saw Marlon struggle to communicate post-stroke. This is called Aphasia. Around 1/3 who have a stroke will experience it. People with aphasia are still just as intelligent as they were before, their barrier is just communication. Be #Aphasia aware.
