Karol Nawrocki was clearly genuine when he called Vladimir Putin a war criminal yesterday. That part is not in doubt. So the more interesting question is why, a few hours later, he was in Budapest meeting Viktor Orbán, Putin's Trojan horse in Europe. The answer is that being anti-Putin does not distinguish anyone. It is the baseline across the political spectrum. There is no real political gain in emphasising it. The gains lie elsewhere. The visit to Budapest allows Nawrocki to strengthen two things that do matter for him. His positioning against Brussels ahead of 2027, and his alignment with Donald Trump and the wider nationalist right. Those are active political assets. The anti-Putin line is already priced in. So it was a calculation that the benefits of the first two outweigh the cost of being seen alongside Orbán.
