The AFL is proud to be one of 100+ organizations that signed an open letter defending the Canadian Museum for Human Rights against the campaign targeting its Nakba exhibit. Public museums should be free from political interference. We stand with the CMHR and its curatorial independence. Read the letter: ijvcanada.org/defend-cmhr

They're comfortable saying it out loud because nobody has made them pay for it. They have a government that works for them. Their taxes go down, their subsidies go up, and workers' rights get overridden at all levels of government whenever it's convenient. From where Lütke is sitting, taking the vote off poor people just looks like the next reasonable ask.

Canadian billionaire Tobi Lütke, the CEO of Shopify, compared pensioners to legal dependents and said they shouldn't be allowed to vote, while endorsing a system where people making over $500,000/yr get five votes each. Billionaires in this country don't want working class people voting, and they're getting awfully comfortable saying it out loud.

Mr. Lutke should be rightly condemned for these authoritarian views on democracy, and his frequent pompous directives to governments should be discounted accordingly. But please don't glorify Shopify as one of Canada's 'largest' companies: it isn't remotely. /2
Gil McGowan@gilmcgowan

The CEO of Shopify, one of Canada’s largest corporations, says the poor and the elderly should not be allowed to vote. It’s pretty clear that billionaires are the real problem, not ordinary citizens.

Premier Smith: are you a coward or a champion? Will you actually stand up for Albertans and the rest of Canada by putting our leverage on the table, or will you keep reassuring Trump that Alberta will never fight back? It's time to leave Team MAGA and join Team Canada.

Smith says she just wants to get to the table, but what is she actually bringing to it? She gave away Alberta's strongest card for free, and Albertans got hit with tariffs anyway. These tariffs are going to hit us in 30 days, and workers across Canada will be paying for them while Smith keeps reassuring Trump that Alberta will never push back. As @GilMcGowan put it: this isn't pragmatism, it's cowardice and negligence.

Trump just signed another round of tariffs on Canada, 50% on a long list of goods, and they even apply to CUSMA-compliant products. But look at what he conveniently left off the list: oil, potash, and critical minerals. He didn't spare them out of kindness, he spared them because the United States needs them. Refineries across the American Midwest basically run on Alberta crude, which means tariffing our energy would drive up his own gas prices. That gives Alberta real leverage in this fight, and Danielle Smith is refusing to use it.

WestJet's CEO claimed flight attendants are "compensated for every single hour they work," which is blatantly untrue. You don't get a 99.4% strike vote with a 97% turnout from a workforce that's being paid fairly. 4,400 of them could strike as early as Aug 2, which is the August long weekend. If it comes to that, remember who caused it: the company that refused to pay for work, not the workers.

WestJet flight attendants just voted 99.4% in favour of a strike. Ninety-nine point four percent. With a 97% turnout. They're sending a clear message: UNPAID WORK WON'T FLY! 🧵

Currently, WestJet flight attendants only get paid when the aircraft is in motion. That means boarding, deplaning, ground delays, safety checks, Their union, CUPE, says that adds up to ~35 hours of free work every month, and junior crew can effectively earn below minimum wage. Imagine your boss only paying you for SOME of the hours you work.

The Smith government has agreed to let Meta, a foreign tech giant, draw as much power from Alberta's grid as the ENTIRE city of Edmonton uses, for at least two years before Meta's own power plant is even built. There was no public consultation.
