🏚️ Renting in Britain is broken. But there’s a straightforward, low-cost solution. Well-designed rent controls would protect renters from increasingly unaffordable housing costs, without costing the government billions or undermining housing supply. 🔗 Read our report to find out more ippr.org/articles/housi…

I suspected Burnham's new cabinet had no private sector experience but it's starker than I thought ... Two - at a push three - of the cabinet members have done anything except be a council worker, charity or union employee or Labour staffer. Big government is about to get bigger.

@emmafildes your country is totally dependent on foreign investment just to fund your ballooning current account deficit of £78bn per year. 2% wealth tax would make you global pariah. Your currency would crash, wiping out any gains. City would be destroyed as financial centre too. Good luck

A recent study suggests that by imposing a minimum 2% charge on households with more than £100m in wealth; £10bn could be raised annually to HMRC. To stop the wealthy from jumping ship, they’d force the rich to pay the tax for at least 10 years after they quit the UK. They estimated this would affect only 1,000 households and would therefore be easier to implement. Yet the wealthy are also exceptional at hiding wealth so I don’t believe any audit would be straightforward. @phillipinman @guardian theguardian.com/business/2026/

Something isn’t right with Britain on a “structural level”. @TomMcTague says “you can feel it” on returning home from abroad.

@PeterZeihan Literally no one agrees on a vision of what we should be. None of the political parties can even agree internally what we should be. It’s a total mess. We don’t even have these discussions either, everything is focused on immigration and the cost of living.

When you look past the two tier judiciary, the cost of living increases, the diminished relationship with the US, David Lammy, the failure to implement the Supreme Court ruling on women only spaces, the restarting of the trial of puberty blockers, the closure of 100 private schools, siding with Hamas, the murders of Wayne Broadhurst, Henry Nowak,Rhiannon Whyte, the hosepipe bans, the pissing rain, the appointment of Peter Mandelson, the Chagos Islands surrender, the battle to bring an Egyptian terrorist to the UK and give him citizenship, the prosecution of veterans, the bombing of UK sovereign territory in Cyprus with no response, closure of our last blast furnace, youth unemployment that would shame a Spaniard, the Chinese Embassy being hooked up to MI6s servers, twenty Ministerial resignations, the return of James Corden from the US, Mrs Browns Boys recommissioned, the a303 remaining unwidened, the tax take hitting a record high and still borrowing grew, a third of our electricity coming from foreigners, GB Energy, taxing farmers to suicide, rape gangs being replenished in every town and city, apart from that Lewis it has felt we've just lived through a golden age. You pillock.

Keir Starmer is right- in many ways the country has improved compared to two years ago. He deserves to say that and for it to be heard. It’s also true to recognise the tragedy of his government: given the majority Labour achieved, it has neither improved enough nor shown enough signs that it will under him. Nor can he communicate to the country that which he has done. And that’s why he’s gone.
