Fernando Mendoza was a 2 star coming out of high school.
He had to beg his way into college football.
He won the national championship.
He won the Heisman trophy.
He is the first pick in the NFL draft.
The coaches that knew him the best growing up were probably telling college coaches he was special but the college coaches were reliant on the rankings to formulate their opinions.
Makeup, work ethic, toughness, maturity and aptitude are monumentally more important than showcase skills.
Special players have special traits from a young age that don't show up in player rankings.
Players
If you're genuinely outworking the competition and sacrificing like a maniac.
Believe in yourself and be relentless like Fernando Mendoza.

I’m a high school teacher. We have policies. Late work gets points deducted. Turn it in on time or take the hit. That’s how students learn responsibility. Senior year. Final paper worth thirty percent of the grade. Due Friday. Monday came. Still no paper from this one kid. Smart kid. Never missed assignments before.
Called him to my desk after class. “Where’s your paper?” He looked down. “I don’t have it” Waited. He didn’t elaborate. “You know this tanks your grade right? Might not graduate” He nodded. Still wouldn’t look at me. “Do you not care?” His voice cracked. “My dad died Thursday night. Heart attack. Paper was done. On my laptop. But I’ve been at the hospital. At the funeral home. I forgot. I just forgot.”
My chest tightened. “I’m so sorry. Why didn’t you tell me?” “Because it sounds like an excuse. Everyone has excuses.” He finally looked up. Eyes red. “Just fail me. I deserve it.”
Closed my gradebook. “Email me the paper tonight. Full credit. And take this week off. Come back when you’re ready.” He shook his head. “The policy—” “I’m the teacher. I make exceptions when life happens. Your dad died. That’s not an excuse. That’s a tragedy. Go home.”
He graduated. Top ten percent. Spoke at graduation. Mentioned a teacher who showed him that rules and compassion can coexist. I was in the audience. Crying.
Sometimes grace matters more than policy.

I listed my son's old mountain bike on Facebook Marketplace for $50. A guy showed up an hour later in a rusted-out sedan. His work boots were held together with duct tape, and his hands were stained black with grease. He pulled a wad of cash from his pocket and started counting. It was two crumpled twenties and ten dollars in quarters. "It's my boy's tenth birthday," he said, wiping sweat off his forehead. "I've been picking up scrap metal all week after my shifts to get this.
He's never had a bike with gears before." I looked at the quarters sitting in his calloused palm. I thought about my own son, playing a $500 video game console inside the air-conditioned house. I pushed his hand back toward his chest. "Actually," I said, "I realized the brakes need a little adjusting. So it's free." Before he could argue, I went into the garage and grabbed my son's brand-new spare helmet and a heavy-duty bike lock. "Take these, too. A ten-year-old needs a helmet."
He didn't say a word. He just grabbed my hand and squeezed it, his eyes welling up. Sometimes, the best profit you can make on a sale is protecting a father's dignity.

@LWillson_82 @d0wnsideofme Luke-your football analysis is awesome. I enjoy you and Jay after all football games wrapping it up on TSN. Keep it up! CFL and NFL commentary bang on.
English

Dear Luke:
You are absolute dogshit on every TSN broadcast. Your football knowledge is insignificant, and your analytical knowledge even less so. You’re over your head here. Please let someone capable take your place.
Thank You,
Canadian Football Fans.

Man I didn’t have getting into it on this app with some blue jays podcaster on my bingo card tonight. What an exhilarating run. Really had him agitated. The last 5 days have been electric but need to take a few day hiatus! Cheers everyone!

Today I had a positive meeting with Prime Minister @MarkJCarney during which we discussed the recent events in Venezuela, and how they underscore the necessity to greatly expedite the approval of a one million barrel per day oil pipeline to Canada’s pacific coast as well as an expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline.
As outlined in my letter to the Prime Minister yesterday, Alberta’s intention is to submit our application for an oil pipeline to the northwest BC coast to the major projects office by June at the latest, and I have asked for it to be approved no later than this Fall.
I have also expressed to him that any delay risks ceding market share, losing investment, and undermining Canada’s competitive position in a rapidly changing global energy landscape.
The federal government needs to act with urgency to seize this opportunity, safeguard long-term economic security, and secure our energy future.
See the full letter I sent him earlier this week below ⬇️
