UPDATE: The county brought in helicopters and several battalions of firefighters, including incarcerated firefighters, to protect the nearly 5,000 incarcerated people and staff of the jail until the fire was under control. Putting pressure on public officials works.

URGENT: The four north county jails are now in a mandatory evacuation zone due to the Hughes Fire‼️ We’ve alerted the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, but we need your help. Call the Board and demand an immediate evacuation OUTSIDE of the Hughes Fire evacuation zone.

Sheriff Luna says that they may force 5,000 incarcerated folks to “shelter in place” because some of the facilities “are made of concrete” THEYRE IN AN IMMEDIATE EVACUATION ORDER & THE FIRE IS 0% CONTAINED & growing quickly! LASD & the county are putting people’s lives at risk
People's City Council - Los Angeles@PplsCityCouncil

This is actually a very serious issue that requires everyone’s urgent attention. The county has yet to evacuate anyone yet and the sheriffs seemingly do not have enough buses to evacuate 5,000 people immediately. @kathrynbarger must use other resources to get this done ASAP

🚨 #LosAngeles: The #HughesFire is rapidly approaching the county jail, where roughly 5,000 incarcerated individuals and hundreds of sheriff's deputies remain trapped. The jail is in a mandatory evacuation zone, however the county has not provided any plan for these people’s safety. Nearly 6,000 people are in imminent danger because of LA County’s ongoing failure to keep incarcerated people safe and alive.

UPDATE: The LA Sheriff's Department and Board of Supervisors have failed to evacuate at least 4,700 people who are incarcerated just five miles from a wildfire that broke out hours ago. The board must act NOW to save the lives of the people who are imprisoned.

The Hughes fire broke out a little before 11 a.m., roughly 5 miles north of the Pitchess Detention Center. The sheriff's department has struggled with a shortage of buses to transport inmates. latimes.com/california/sto…

Over the past three years, 120 deported veterans have finally returned home to the United States. But without a pardon from President Biden, most of these veterans will soon be at risk of deportation again by the upcoming Trump administration.

Though we didn’t get the outcome we hoped for, this hard-fought campaign brought the urgent conversation on prison slavery to the forefront. We made important strides since this campaign began, placing rehabilitation & dignity at the heart of California’s dialogue on justice.

BREAKING: The AP just called the 2024 presidential election for Donald Trump. We’re clear-eyed about the chaos and destruction a second Trump administration will cause to our nation. That’s why we’re done with handwringing, admiring the problem, or waiting anxiously to see which unlawful action President-elect Trump will take on Day One. We are ready to take action the minute Trump takes the oath of office.
