That ChartMasters article is the best thing they’ve put out ever
Especially when y'all come for Beyoncé and how certain artists are more famous than her, globally!
It highlights what I’ve been saying about how the streaming era and the current music landscape have made even the biggest artists of today not as global as the artists of the 90s and early to mid-20s.
Social media, sales, streams, paid PR etc, made fans overestimate how famous these artists are. The Bad Bunny example was particularly striking and I was not surprised at that one placement. The article may not be perfect. I have some reservations about certain artists and their placements there.
The more options we have as regards how we consume music, the less famous these artists become. 20 years ago, we could only consume music through one or two channels. And everyone listened to the same artists.
A song might be #100 on the charts, selling under 100k, but be rest assured we knew it cos we didn’t have the option of who and what to listen to. It’s why the same song making waves in India, will be making waves in Nigeria and Italy. We all relied on the radio and TV for entertainment updates. We consumed whatever they gave us.
Now, with streaming platforms, Itunes etc. We now have the option to filter out artists we don't care for, the algorithm helps to even filter out the artists without us doing it. Someone who only listens to classical music, won't know who Drake is or care cos the streaming services will filter him automatically. And that goes for people who only listen to their local music as well.
With a billion radio stations worldwide, some hardly play international artists. Which was different back then. They weren’t as many local acts and stations then, so they all resorted to playing international artists more than local acts.
The biggest artists of today, may not ever see the level of fame of 90s acts.
