New leopard study published by @CapeLeopardTrst! Some fascinating dispersals - up to 112km! We @T4Cinc & our partner @WildMeORG are proud to support this research through the @ACWildbook platform, offered for free to CLT & other conservationists across Africa #leopard #AIforgood
Cape Leopard Trust (CLT)@CapeLeopardTrst

Insightful results from a collaborative study to investigate #leopard dispersal in a transformed landscape, using combined #cameratrap data from @CapeLeopardTrst ,Walker Bay FC, @Nuwejaars & @PantheraCats More on FB, IG, & LinkedIN, full paper at doi.org/10.1111/aje.13…

The 10th species that we support; the striped hyena, Hyaena hyaena. Interestingly, the only species of hyena that is in the genus Hyaena (there are 4 extant species of hyena, each in their own genus). With ~10,000 left and pops declining the IUCN lists them as Near Threatened.

While bottlenose dolphins led data growth last week in Wildbook, the Nubian giraffe was second and taught us how to patiently type its long Latin name (Giraffa camelopardalis camelopardalis)! Thanks to @Save_Giraffe for bringing this species to Giraffespotter.org. 🐬🦒🦎🐈

Ever wondered what #CitizenScience looks like? It's as easy as uploading a photo of a #carnivore in #Africa and some information about where you saw it. That's enough to help researchers monitor individuals. Your sightings are valuable! Head to @ACWildbook to get involved!

The 9th species supported by #ACW; the #serval cat. This solitary #wildcat is found in sub Saharan Africa but avoids rainforests/deserts. It prefers close to water and can prey on juvenile Nile crocodiles! Pop. estimates vary; basically we don't know how many there are left.

Not all algorithms are equal. Some perform better than others, and this depends on the target species e.g. spotted hyenas, Crocuta crocuta. Hotspotter vs MiewID candidate identified in #1 spot: HotSpotter: 51% MiewID: 80% A huge difference! @african_wildbook

The #brownhyena, Hyaena brunnea, the only extant species of its genus, the rarest hyaena, and one of the 10 species supported by ACW. Found in southern Africa, the brown hyena or #strandwolf is commonly found in desert, semi-arid desert, and woodland savannah areas. @WildMeORG

Our photos and videos of a 3-legged lion and his brother swimming across Uganda’s Kazinga channel have made it to the New York Times. In February we filmed Jacob and Tibu swimming ~1.6 km across croc and hippo dense waters in search of lionesses! Check it out here: archive.is/58PfB

The African wild dog; the species that triggered the motivation to build the ACW. Their unique coat patterns are relatively easy for people to differentiate, but a big challenge for our algorithms. Now we can, so get involved! #machinelearning #ai #tech4good

The cheetah, Acinonyx jubatus, world's fastest land mammal. 98km/h (61mph) in a zoo... 93.24km/h (57.9mph) in the wild... Either way, very fast, and currently supported by our Wildbook. @T4Cinc @WildMeORG

The African #lion, Panthera leo, another of the 10 species supported by ACW. Difficult to ID (no handy spots...) we are harnessing facial recognition software to tell individuals apart. With less than 20,000 left in Africa, #research and #conservation of this species is vital!

A reminder to all #wolf researchers; you may be able to #help us! We need wolf ID kits to train #algorithms to identify individuals from photos! We want to add wolves to our Wild North Wildbook to help the #conservation of this species. Please get in touch if you can help!

The African #leopard, Panthera pardus, one of the most elusive animals to study #Cameratraps are often used to monitor this shy #bigcat, which is where we step in. We help researchers/conservationists to individually ID from photographs, leaving more time for #conservation work!

Do you have any #wolf ID kits that you can loan @T4Cinc to train their algorithms to identify individuals from photographs? Once trained and added to the Wild North Wildbook, its free for conservationists to use! If you can help, please get in touch! #conservation #ai

This past week saw our community climb past 210k individual animals tracked! While whales and leopards led, we're excited to see Chital and Sika deer appear on the data leaderboard for the first time! 🐳🐆🦒🦌
