"BAJH OYE… 104 AYA!", Squadron Leader Brijpal Singh Sikand frantically screamed in pure Punjabi to his wingman Flying Officer Pathania over Akhnur sector on 3rd Sept 1965. Eight IAF Gnats were wolf pack hunting two PAF Sabres on CAP… until one F-104 Starfighter on overwatch casually entered the melee and went supersonic, turning the entire Indian formation into a bunch of toddlers wetting their pants and rushing for the exit. Sikand was so disoriented that he low fuel landed his Gnat at Pasrur and surrendered to the PAF like a lost puppy. He spent the rest of the war sipping our legendary PAF chai… before rising to the rank of Air Marshal in the IAF for his "legendary exploits" (after all perfecting post chai supersonic dikaars during captivity is no mean feat). Gnat #IE1083 from 23 Squadron was subsequently consigned to the PAF Museum in Karachi after extensive evaluation. For me the F-104 will always be more than just a jet, it's my first love and the first Mach 2 ass kicker that made countless IAF pilots soil themselves in the cockpit. The undisputed original CHAD of the skies.
