Most organisations don’t fail because they choose the wrong things. They fail because they keep choosing more things.
We were delighted to have John O’Brien MBE Anthropist, founder of @AnthropyUK, on @ResponsibleEdge with Charlie to talk about leadership, timing and focus.
John made a quietly subversive point. Modern leadership systems reward motion, visibility and urgency. Not judgment. Not restraint. Certainly not stopping.
In most organisations, starting something feels brave. Ending it feels awkward. So initiatives linger. They generate activity, meetings and slides. Just enough progress to avoid being questioned. Not enough impact to justify the effort.
Anthropy exists as a deliberate interruption to that logic.
Not another conference. Not another leadership brand. But a change in pace. Fewer slogans. Fewer performative ideas. More space to think properly about what actually matters and when.
John’s argument was simple. Speed only helps when you’re heading in the right direction. Focus matters more than momentum. And leadership is as much about subtraction as ambition.
In a world addicted to busyness, maybe the most responsible move is knowing what to stop.
