AEK supporters displayed a banner about the Pontic Greeks in the 19th minute of the match against Olympiacos. The banner included the phrases “19 May”, “353,000 innocent souls” and “Pontus lives”. In Greece, May 19 is recognized as a day of remembrance for the Pontic Greeks. The Greek side describes the events that took place in the Black Sea region between the late 1910s and the 1920s as the “Pontic Genocide”, while Turkey rejects this definition and argues that the events should be evaluated within the conditions of war and conflict. The Pontus issue still remains a controversial and politically sensitive topic between Turkey and Greece today.
