A new DNR study details tsunami impacts of a magnitude 9.0 earthquake - The Big One - to the Olympic Peninsula. Experts estimate a 10-17% chance of a Cascadia mega-quake in the next 50 years.

A substantial variation in mechanism, depth and location from different agencies for the M7.3 earthquake off the coast of New Zealand, suggesting that this may be a complex earthquake emsc-csem.org/Earthquake/ear…

Interesting but unnerving Twitter discussion about early earthquake depth determination for the recent New Zealand earthquake. Depth is extra tricky to determine for earthquakes but very important for tsunami potential. Half my PhD was spent modeling for really good EQ depths.

@UKEQ_Bulletin @seismo_steve @geonet @seismic_kiwi I would say that the shallow depths are more reliable - the GeoNet solution seems to have very narrow azimuth coverage. Global nets are not likely to have an ~90km depth error for such a large earthquakes.

Starting to see the #Tsunami waves registering on the East Cape gauge - hopefully the falling tide will reduce any inundation (Source: geonet.org.nz/tsunami)
