@Amnesty welcomes the 🇨🇦Supreme Court’s decision, which is even more symbolic as it came on the eve of International Women’s Day, as women are often the most economically affected by the lack of access to childcare services.

@Amnesty filed a third-party intervention in the case, submitting that the exclusion of Kanyinda based on her immigration status resulted in compounded discriminatory outcomes, disproportionately affecting her on the basis of intersecting, prohibited grounds of discrimination.

This is the 2nd time that the European Court ruled against Poland’s highly restrictive & detrimental abortion legal framework resulting from the 2020 ruling. Pregnant people are forced to travel abroad to obtain the abortion healthcare they need & are entitled to.

Poland has one of the most restrictive abortion laws in Europe. Abortion is only permitted if a pregnant woman's health or life is at risk or if the pregnancy results from a rape or incest.

In its submissions, Amnesty International and SALC emphasize that the Court must consider international law on effective remedy and corporate accountability in the certification test of a class action, even when abuses by multinational corporations occur beyond national borders.

But this decision will resonate far beyond this case, it is a pivotal moment for corporate accountability and raises questions about whether South African corporations can operate abroad without being held to the same human-rights standards in place domestically in South Africa.

Unlawful dispersal of a peaceful assembly violates the right to peaceful assembly. International standards are clear that the threshold for the dispersal of an assembly is high and it is “only in exceptional cases”.

Today, the Court of Appeal in Benguela, Angola is hearing evidence in a case against the National Police of Lobito for their unlawful use of force against 6 people including women, who were severely beaten & tortured whilst exercising their right to peaceful assembly.
