The requirement of giving notice to government before conversion is also ridiculous; while these laws are often called ‘Freedom of Religion’ laws, everyone knows a public notice provision and poking by government officials and busy bodies will have the opposite effect.

Hence, these laws are actually anti-miscegenation laws in disguise, which are typically invoked by conservative families and bigoted busy bodies when there is an inter-faith marriage.
In further proof of our disconnect with the liberal values of our Constitution, Maharashtra has now joined other BJP ruled states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana and Rajasthan to pass anti-conversion laws.

Why one converts is a matter that should be left to the judgment of that individual only: it could be for free education or to save one’s soul or to escape a stifling social situation or to integrate better with one’s in-laws.
