Former USMNT player Robbie Rogers won the 2014 MLS Cup with LA Galaxy— becoming the first openly male gay athlete to win a major professional sports title in the U.S.
He’s also produced a documentary on former soccer player Tony Powell’s mysterious disappearance from public eye.
In a conversation about Powell’s documentary, Rogers recalled learning about Justin Fashanu— the first soccer player to come out while playing in England.
“I was at Leeds when I first learned about Justin,” he said.
“On the telly, next to a picture of Justin, there was a question: ‘Will there ever be another gay footballer?’”
“The other players and I were having lunch and they started saying things that scared me – like how disgusting it would be to have a gay man showering with us. That told me this is not a world where I can be myself and still compete.”
“I kept quiet. Although I had some close friends in the UK I didn’t have anyone in football to share that secret. I was a little lonely.”
After being released by Leeds, Rogers came out and returned to the U.S. where he joined LA Galaxy.
Now, he’s been an advocate for LGBTQ+ and he’s happy to help produce this documentary on Powell.
Powell was a former player from England. He was married and had two daughters, but abandoned his family to move to the U.S. in 1980s and played for likes of San Jose Earthquakes and Seattle Sounders.
He cut ties with his family so they had no idea where he was for 35 years. He took that drastic decision because he was convinced his family would shun him if they learned the truth about his sexuality.
With help from the directors of the documentary, Powell reunited with his two sisters and brother in England, as well as his daughters— who didn’t want to be filmed but reconciled with him and visited him in the U.S.
Now 78, the former Norwich and Bournemouth player managed Holloway Motel in West Hollywood for 25 years.
His documentary is called “The Last Guest of the Holloway Motel.”

@Pratherj92672 @MLS Yes, the initiative was launched within MLS in 2023 because of multiple reported incidents that were player on player.
English

We just completed Year 3 of @MLS’s ‘Playing As One’ initiative to address player-on-player discriminatory incidents. Proud to be part of a league that isn’t just talking about change, but actively working toward it. Most diverse sport in the world, we need real change.

🚨 Kylian Mbappé: “Prestianni clearly called Vini Jr a monkey, it happened five times”. “I saw that. UEFA have the best cameras, now we wait. This is not acceptable. It’s not my kind of human being”.
English

@matthewdmarsden @TouchlineX You do realize how many people applied? There were 500 million requests with a rough estimate of 6 million tickets available. You are talking about 4 people.
English

@TouchlineX I know 4 people who have tried the lottery for tickets, and no one got them. No one is going to pay 100s of dollars a ticket here. Its overpriced.

BAILA @vinijr and please never stop.
They will never tell us what we have to do or not. ✊🏽

@atrupar Tomorrow he will say he didn’t see it and say how amazing TP show was.
English

Disgusting behavior from some fans. MLS is taking a stand on this type of behavior.
As someone who had a “fan” threaten to dig up my son’s dead body, I had to go as far as to get law enforcement involved.
This sport is the most diverse in the world yet we see this so often.

I’m excited to share that I’ll be joining @ChicagoFireFCII as a Player-Coach. After 17 years in the game, this is a dream role: staying connected to the field while stepping deeper into the responsibility of guiding and developing the next generation of players.
One of the greatest parts of my career has been learning from incredible teammates and coaches, and now I’m ready to pour that experience back into our young players. I’m looking forward to mentoring, challenging and supporting them as they become professionals both on and off the pitch.
Thank you to the entire @ChicagoFire organization for trusting me in this important role. I’m beyond grateful. My heart is full. Time to get to work and build something special. Vamos!
