🗣️ On #WorldSuicidePreventionDay, a reminder that words matter.

It’s been 63 years since suicide was decriminalised in the UK. But so many of us still use the term ‘commit suicide’. Why does it matter? Language that links suicide and crime can increase stigma and prevent people struggling with suicidal thoughts from speaking out. If we choose language like ‘died by suicide’ or ‘took their own life’ we allow space for open conversations and compassion. Let’s choose our words carefully. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay

Hi, my name is Paddy, and today I went to parliament with YoungMinds. Today was a big day— a big day for me and a big day for young people at home. I held in my hands the stories of over 700 young people and their allies, speaking about how hard it is to be a young person today. I delivered these letters to parliament so that your words and stories are now in the hands of MPs. To every single person who shared their story, I am so grateful for you. I want you to know that your words have power, and they truly matter. MPs need to know what is going on, and by sharing your story, you have given them a reality check they cannot ignore. It is time young people's voices are heard. It’s time for MPs to understand the challenges young people are facing and to address the root causes behind the mental health crisis. Although it might not feel like it, I know there is hope. I know that change is possible. You deserve a world that supports your mental health, and I know that world exists. After today, I firmly believe that together, we can rewrite our future.
