@PacificPlazaRec I don't know what was formative for the genre as I was pretty late to the party, but the main driver is the feeling of nostalgia for a time that never existed. art is supposed to evoke emotions and barber beats are a neat audio-visual package with a dash of mystery.

@PacificPlazaRec modest by default is #1. macro and hfm are staple of course. oblique occasions has some real bangers and experiments a lot, which I like. there's tons of cool artists but I felt like Jazz was overused so I found my own niche and made my own stuff which I also listen to :)
