The brain treats being wrong the same way it treats being attacked.
It’s not stubbornness, it’s biology. Your ego is literally wired to protect your self image before it protects the truth.
Then there’s the social layer. Most people grew up in environments where being wrong means punishment, embarrassment or losing respect. So over time, admitting fault became associated with weakness, and the mind learned to avoid it at all costs.
There’s also identity attachment. When you’ve held a belief long enough, it stops being something you think and starts being something you are. Challenging the belief feels like challenging the person, so the defense mechanism kicks in hard.
The people who can genuinely say “I was wrong” have done serious internal work. It takes ego strength, not ego weakness, to admit fault without falling apart.
