realistically everyone SHOULD be pushing for physical games to become like vinyl (a premium option for enthusiasts) & for digital ownership to be a real thing regardless of platform instead of something we assume is real because it's the right thing to do.
but y'all just like performing anger on the internet over actually standing on/for anything so nothing good will come of this 🫠

The truth is that the technology and costs of physical media aren't able to compete with digital. Have a game over 64GB for Switch 2? It can never be fully on the cartridge and will require an additional download. Have a game under 64GB? You can use a cartridge, but you have to price the game over $60 to make any real margin given the cost of the cart. Then there's the speed of the cards themselves which means it's more beneficial for some large open world games to be installed to the Switch 2 storage than streamed from the cartridge. This is the same issue that Sony and Xbox have run into with discs, and why every game has to be installed to the SSD. There's also the 100GB limit for PS5 discs which means disc costs to double if you need to use a second disc (100GB+ game). And I haven't even touched on production, packaging, shipping, retailer margin and other costs / material processes. Without a breakthrough in physical media, the entire games industry will be 100% digital at some point. That being said, retail still plays an important role and Nintendo is going to dominate the space going forward. It remains to be seen whether Sony takes a material hit from the lack of retail presence outside of digital download / PSN cards.
