I have been married for 3 years. Alhamdulillah, I have a son, but my husband has two marriages. I am the second wife. Why I married a married man is another story—he convinced my family a lot that he would fulfil all my rights and treat both wives fairly. He hid our marriage from his family for 2.5 years, and now he has disclosed it to his first wife. His wife humiliates me a lot, but he never takes a stand for me and always asks me to be patient (sabar). Now it has been 3 years and 3 months. He has given me a separate home and is fulfilling my and our son’s needs. He is taking care of our expenses, but he does not stay with us. In these 3 years, he has only stayed with us for 10–12 days. Whenever I ask him, he says that I need to wait and that everything will get better. Now my patience has reached its limit. When I ask for a divorce, he says, “I won’t give you one. If you want it, go to court and take khula, but I won’t come and sign the papers.” He is neither giving me a divorce nor properly acknowledging me. He is neither accepting me nor letting me go. I have been alone and bearing this pain for the last 3 years. No one understands my condition. I am becoming mentally exhausted and feel like I look much older than I am.
