I was a bit surprised to see many other international media outlets calling the People's Party the favorites, when the most reliable domestic pollster had BJT winning (although even they underestimated the margin of victory). world.thaipbs.or.th/detail/bhumjai…

As many expected, the conservative Bhumjaithai party won the most seats in Thailand's election on the wave of nationalist, pro-military sentiment following the (conveniently timed) renewed border clashes with Cambodia in December. foreignpolicy.com/2026/02/06/tha…

the bigger problem is many Cambodian (and Thai) journalists see themselves as being in an information war with each other, rather than being comrades in the search for truth, even if that truth made their own country look bad

Incredible how so few have seemed willing to scrutinise claims made by a government that has consistently lied to its people. The decimation of the free press in Cambodia has allowed so much fake news to circulate at a time where information is critical. thediplomat.com/2025/08/why-ca…

In Ubon Ratchathani, Cambodian artillery and rocket fire in July displaced some 20,000 civilians, who haven't been able to return home yet due to continued tensions on the border

“I prepared for it, but I never really thought it would happen,” she said, sitting on the tile floor of a Buddhist pagoda where she has been sheltering for more than 10 days. “Bombs were falling in the rice fields.” aljazeera.com/news/2025/8/7/…

Life goes on in Ubon Ratchathani despite rumors of a troop build-up at the Thai-Cambodian border, some 65 miles away, complicating plans for ~100,000 evacuees to return home

The NMSP was slow to join the fight, with some Mon nationalists worrying about being left behind “If the Mon don’t take part in this moment, when the military falls and we talk about ethnic rights and politics at a national level, it will be harder for us to demand anything.”

Shadow puppetry is disappearing from Kelantan Malaysia, in part due to Muslim backlash against an art form rooted in Hindu mythology. The last master is breaking with tradition, updating storylines for a modern age and, for the first time, teaching women hyperallergic.com/1018846/preser…

This is of course a good thing, and people should continue fundraising and donating while this window of opportunity remains open.

Despite a narrative pushed by activists mostly abroad, humanitarian sources on the ground said aid is getting to people in need, and the overwhelming majority of the damage is in regime territory. Meaning the junta has less reason to block aid and less opportunity to weaponize it

After five incredible years, I've made the very difficult decision to leave Frontier Myanmar to focus on some longer term projects and on-the-ground reporting ...including recently wrapping up a six-day trip to Karen State with the Karen National Liberation Army

In the last few years: - The Philippines elected the son of a 20 year dictator they staged a mass uprising to overthrow - Indonesia elected a former general who served a brutally violent military dictatorship - The US elected the man who tried to steal the previous election

Relieved that Mech Dara has been released, but his charges should also be dropped. Bail conditions are often used to pressure journalists and activists into silence under the threat of being imprisoned again.

BREAKING: Award-winning Cambodian journalist @MechDara1 has been released from prison. No details yet on whether the charges against him will be dropped - and they should be - but for now it's a relief to see him out of prison.
