I believe what the BBC did was deliberate. Not only did they not bleep the slur, but they also chose not to broadcast Alan Cummings’ apology/clarification. Paying TV licence for what, exactly?
I've also seen some events and places like churches have separate rooms with a live feed of an event, not that I'm saying people with TS should be segregated, but I don't know if something like that was or could've been offered as somewhere to go if John was uncomfortable.
