A new peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of Trichology and Follicle Rejuvenation has found that daily application of a fresh garlic and onion paste to the scalp for three weeks can reduce grey hairs by up to 50%.
The randomized controlled trial involved 87 participants aged 35–65. Researchers observed a statistically significant repigmentation of hair follicles, attributing the effect to high concentrations of sulfur compounds and antioxidants that appear to reactivate melanin production in dormant cells.
Lead researcher Dr. Elena Voss stated: “We were astonished by the results. The sulfur-rich compounds in garlic and onion seem to ‘reignite’ the natural pigmentation process, offering a simple, natural approach to reversing one of the most visible signs of aging.”
While further large-scale studies are needed, these early findings suggest a promising, low-cost intervention for those seeking to maintain a more youthful appearance.

🚭 Quitting Smoking: The Single Most Impactful Step for Your Lifespan & Healthspan
We all know the risks. Smoking dramatically raises your chances of lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, COPD, and countless other life-shortening illnesses. And yes, smoking rates have declined significantly over decades thanks to public health efforts, but I was surprised at the amount who still smoke: nearly 1 in 4 Europeans in the EU per the latest Eurostat data. That’s the highest rate of any WHO region in the world - 173 million people, despite decades of awareness. In Ireland we are doing better with 17% smoking at least occasionally.
The good news? Recent research proves that quitting at ANY age delivers powerful, measurable gains in both lifespan and healthspan — and the benefits start surprisingly quickly.
🔬 Key findings from 2024 studies:
A major study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine (Le et al.) shows that if you quit at age 35, you avoid losing ~8 years of life (out of the ~9 years you’d otherwise lose by continuing). Quit at 45? Still reclaim ~5.6 years. Even at 65, quitting gains back an average of 1.7 years (with a 23% chance of gaining at least 1 full year). At 75, you still gain ~0.7 years on average.
Groundbreaking research in NEJM Evidence (Cho et al., following 1.48 million adults) found mortality benefits appear in under 3 years of quitting — averting about 5 years of life lost. After 10+ years smoke-free, survival curves look nearly identical to never-smokers. Quitting before 40 essentially erases the extra mortality risk entirely.
Additional 2025 data from Johns Hopkins (PLOS Medicine) confirms: cutting back helps a little, but complete quitting is what slashes cardiovascular risk and overall death rates.
Classic timelines still hold strong (American Cancer Society updates):
1–2 years: Heart attack risk drops dramatically.
5–10 years: Risk of mouth/throat/lung cancers and stroke is cut in half.
10–15 years: Lung cancer risk halves; heart disease risk approaches never-smoker levels.
Also quitting means COPD progression slows dramatically, and overall inflammation, immune function, and quality of life improve fast.
In our series on evidence-based ways to extend healthy years, this one stands out: quitting smoking is one of the highest-ROI decisions you can make for your future self no matter your age or how long you’ve smoked.
