📣  With the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (#ESPR) setting new requirements for more durable and circular products, manufacturers across Europe signal a clear concern: complex and overlapping rules are slowing down progress on the EU’s sustainability agenda. 💬 In our latest Voices from EU home appliance manufacturers series, Paola Basta, Head of EU Government Relations at our member Beko Europe, highlights how “the cascading nature of EU legislation often results in overlapping and sometimes contradictory requirements for manufacturers, leading to duplicated assessments, repeated products design adaptations and overlapping reporting”. 🔵 This reality is compounded by fragmented implementation at national level, putting additional pressure on the functioning of the #EUSingleMarket. Ensuring harmonised, streamlined rules that avoid double regulation and support faster delivery of high-quality, sustainable products to European consumers is critical. #ESPR #HomeAppliances #SingleMarket

🇪🇺 The European Commission presented yesterday the new digital simplification package but structural challenges remain for EU manufacturers. The introduction of a single EU channel for cybersecurity and data-breach reporting is overdue progress. Yet other parts of the package risk adding complexity, rather than reducing it, especially for appliance producers navigating AI rules, data-sharing requirements, and GDPR obligations. If Europe wants to stay competitive in connected-appliance innovation, the next phase must focus on what truly matters: ✅ clearer scope, ✅ stronger protection for proprietary data, ✅ and workable rules for legacy products. Only then can the #DigitalOmnibus evolve into a framework that genuinely supports innovation, reduces regulatory friction, and delivers on the promise of a “Simpler and Faster” Europe. 👉 If your washing machine worked like a toaster, you’d be doing laundry one sock at a time. ⚠️ This comparison highlights a key regulatory concern: identical requirements cannot apply to products that operate in fundamentally different ways. A quick glance below shows why 👇 Under the EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (#ESPR), a horizontal approach that overlooks these differences risks leading to requirements that are neither proportionate nor workable. The Ecodesign framework proved to be a success story, and it is essential for the #ESPR to build on this foundation. We’re often told that “recycled is better” but, in practice, it’s not that simple. Using recycled materials in products comes with complexities that appliance manufacturers face every day: 👉 Recycled materials aren’t always available in the required volumes or consistent quality. 👉 The inclusion of recycled content requires substantial investments in innovation making it often less competitive to virgin material options. These are the day-to-day challenges our industry faces. And that’s why APPLiA is calling for fit-for-purpose sustainability targets under the #ESPR and the upcoming Circular Economy Act. 💬 To explore what this means in practice, we spoke with Sara Demartini, Circularity Policy Officer at our member company Electrolux Group, who shared what it takes to make recycled content work in appliances. ➡️ Swipe through to see the story unfold.

📢 Last week, the latest simplifications to the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (#CBAM) were published in the EU’s Official Journal. 🇪🇺🧾 ✅ We welcome this decision as an important step forward in making CBAM less burdensome for businesses across Europe. ⛔ However, a key piece that determines its effectiveness is still missing: expanding CBAM to downstream products, including home appliances. A CBAM that truly works must include downstream products. Only then can we protect Europe’s climate ambition and its industrial backbone, and ensure it also fits the needs of the home appliance industry.

As the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (#ESPR) moves toward full implementation, double regulation remains one of the most serious challenges for EU manufacturers. 🎙️ In our series spotlighting the voices of EU appliance manufacturers, APPLiA member BSH Home Appliances Group, Florian Walbert, explains what double legislation looks like in practice. 🟢 What can the EU do? Adopt a more streamlined approach, without overlapping regulations, to cut these barriers, reduce costs and help the EU appliance industry move faster toward sustainable innovation. Have a look at the full case below 👇

🆕🚨𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞 💬 "The Programme confirms the EU’s strategic commitment to circularity, digitalisation, and a more competitive industrial base. The push to revitalise the Single Market is encouraging, as is the promise of simplification through initiatives like the Products Omnibus package. But for this agenda to succeed, it must reflect the needs of the full value chain, not just headline sectors. We call for greater recognition of downstream industries like home appliances and remain committed to working with EU institutions to deliver effective, future-ready policies", commented APPLiA's DG @paolofromfar At APPLiA, we stand ready to support this vision, making sure it translates into concrete actions that work for all industries across the value chain. Today is #HeatPumpDay! 📣 Heat pumps stand out as one of the most efficient ways to heat and cool buildings. They work by creating heat, using renewable energy from the air, water or ground. In home appliances, they power a variety of products; from dryers and water heaters to air conditioners, helping households to cut energy use and emissions. The result is lower costs and a smaller environmental footprint for millions of Europeans. 💬 🎥 Watch our Senior Energy Policy Director, Matteo Rambaldi, explain how with the right framework, innovation can keep growing and heat pumps can help build a cleaner, more sustainable future for everyone. #HomeAppliances #EnergyEfficiency #Sustainability
