🕯️A Mother Reading to a Sleeping Child by Edward Bird (1772-1819) In this tender moment, a young mother sits by the bedside, reading quietly aloud from an open book even as her little one has drifted peacefully into sleep. The soft lamplight, the crisp white nightcap and linens, and the mother’s focused gaze create an intimate scene of love, comfort, and devotion. English genre painter Edward Bird had a special gift for capturing everyday human warmth with sincerity and emotional depth. A beautiful reminder that some stories are best told in whispers. Goodnight, everyone. Sweet dreams.😌 #Books #Art #GenrePainting #Motherhood

♥️Kittens at Play by Charles van den Eycken (1859-1923). Born #OTD on April 17, 1859, in Brussels, this Belgian master had a talent for capturing the playful chaos and irresistible charm of kittens. Here, a litter of fluffy troublemakers has discovered a suit of armor — turning medieval steel into their personal playground. One bold kitty claims the helmet like a throne, while a ginger reaches up with pure determination, and their calico sibling plots the next adventure. Books trampled, wax seals flying… these tiny warriors have conquered the study! Who else starts their Friday smiling at mischievous kittens?😺 #Art #Cats #Kittens #Books #ClassicalPainting #FridayVibes

“The Sacred Staircase of the Santi Sanctuary in Rome” A magnificent 1870 lithograph by Félix Benoist (1818–1896), from his album Rome dans sa grandeur. This striking interior view captures the Scala Santa — the Holy Stairs. According to ancient Christian tradition, these 28 marble steps were brought from Jerusalem by St. Helena in the 4th century and are believed to be the very ones Jesus climbed on the day of his trial before Pontius Pilate. Pilgrims have ascended them on their knees for centuries as an act of penance and devotion. Benoist’s detailed rendering beautifully conveys the grandeur of the sanctuary, with its ornate architecture, flanking statues, and quiet atmosphere of faith. Born #OTD April 15, 1818 in Saumur, France, Benoist was a gifted painter and lithographer celebrated for his architectural and topographical views of Europe. A timeless glimpse into one of Rome’s most revered pilgrimage sites. #Art #Rome #HolyStairs #Lithograph #Books

“The Fisherman's Lesson” by Abbott Fuller Graves (1859–1936). The simple fisherman’s cottage setting adds warmth and intimacy to this heartfelt scene. Born #OTD April 15, 1859, in Weymouth, Massachusetts, Graves excelled at both luminous garden scenes and gentle depictions of everyday American life. Some of the best lessons happen in quiet corners like this one. #Art #AmericanArt #Books #GenrePainting

A rare and personal look at the composer’s own hand. This is an original autograph manuscript of a Concerto for 2 Oboes, 2 Violins, Viola, Bassoon & Harpsichord written by Johann Friedrich Fasch.🎵🎻 Born #OTD April 15, 1688 in Buttelstedt (in the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar), Fasch was a gifted violinist and one of the most inventive German composers of the late Baroque. A near-contemporary of J.S. Bach, he moved toward a lighter, more melodic “galant” style that helped pave the way for Haydn and Mozart. This surviving page of music in his own handwriting brings us wonderfully close to the man himself. His instrumental works — especially his many concertos and overture-suites — are still regularly performed and recorded today. #ClassicalMusic #BaroqueMusic #MusicHistory

“It is difficult to speak adequately or justly of London. It is not a pleasant place; it is not agreeable, or cheerful, or easy, or exempt from reproach. It is only magnificent.” —Henry James, journal entry, 1881 Born #OTD April 15, 1843, in New York, novelist Henry James became one of the greatest chroniclers of transatlantic life, manners, and consciousness. Though American by birth, he spent much of his life in Europe and developed a complex, deeply nuanced love for London — seeing both its flaws and its unmatched grandeur. Portrait of James by English artist Annie Louisa Swynnerton (1844-1933). Does London’s magnificence still outweigh its difficulties today? Is James more right than ever? #Literature #Art #London #Books

Portrait of William Henry Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland, by Thomas Lawrence. In 1783, as Prime Minister, the Duke of Portland met with King George III to address the Prince of Wales’s massive debts. His proposal outraged the King. “It is impossible for me to find words expressive enough of my utter indignation and astonishment,” George III wrote. He was dismayed that Portland had disregarded his judgment as both monarch and father by essentially rubber-stamping the Prince’s demands. “When the Duke of Portland came into office I had at least hoped he would have thought himself obliged to have my interest and that of the public at heart and not have neglected both, to gratify the passions of an ill-advised young man.” [The Correspondence of George, Prince of Wales 1770-1812, Volume I] Born #OTD April 14, 1738, at Bulstrode Park in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, William Henry Cavendish-Bentinck (1738–1809) served twice as British Prime Minister. Step into the private drawing rooms and political intrigues of the Prince’s circle with Colonel Jack St. Leger in my historical novel The Man in the Way. 👉amzn.to/4tDBWUI #CommissionsEarned #Art #History #HistoricalFiction #Books #StLeger #GeorgianEra

Founding Father, principal author of the Declaration of Independence, and third President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826) was born #OTD April 13, 1743, at Shadwell, Virginia. Portrait by Rembrandt Peale (1778–1860). “A truth now and then projecting into the ocean of Newspaper lies, serves like headlands to correct our course. Indeed my skepticism as to every thing I see in a newspaper makes me indifferent whether I ever see one.” — Thomas Jefferson, in a letter to James Monroe, January 1, 1815 #Truth #History #Art #Books #Jefferson
