Pakistan’s ex Foreign Secretary, United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary General to Rwanda, former Chairman of the PCB, Shahryar M Khan has passed away in Lahore, aged 89.
إِنَّا ِلِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ
Extremely literate, from Bhopal, affable, well-mannered, having been educated at Daly College, & The Fletcher School, University of Cambridge in London, his personality was extremely impactful.
His father Nawab Muhammad Sarwar Ali Khan was ruler of the State of Kurwai & mother Princess Begum Abida Sultana was daughter of Nawab of Bhopal, Haji Hafiz Sir Mujammad Nawab Hamidullah Khan.
Shahryar Khan on return from England worked at the Burmah Shell Oil, & in 1957 joined Pakistan’s Foreign Service.
He served as a Third Secretary in London, Second Secretary in Tunis, & was Pakistan’s Ambassador to Jordan in 1976, before being posted to London in 1987. After his times in London, he also served as Pakistan’s Ambassador to France from 1999 until 2001.
He was twice Chairman of the PCB.
Later, Honorary Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, in his retirement, he authored some top books The Begums of Bhopal, The Shallow Graves of Rwanda, , Cricket - A Bridge of Peace, Memoirs of a Rebel Princess, co-authored his son’s book Cricket Cauldron & Shadows Across the Playing Field- 60 years of India-Pakistan Cricket with Shashi Tharoor.
A thorough gentleman, he will be remembered for his contributions to Pakistan. His was a life well-spent.
