For those interested in aviation history, the attached map shows the fledgling system of airfields designated by the government for commercial use after WW1 (1919).  Hounslow Heath was the main London airfield prior to Croydon and subsequently Heathrow.

Peter Forbes, ASA's Managing Director, was on the Expert Panel for a discussion on African aviation with the MSc Air Transport Management students at Cranfield University yesterday. An interesting exploration of the challenges for the aviation sector in this region. #aviation

The lack of CAA oversight and support for the UK's flight training schools is extremely concerning. This potentially threatens not only the flight training schools themselves but also many GA airfields where they are based. flyer.co.uk/caa-asleep-at-…

@BonAbattoir @eastkentcarma Yes - it's about publicity. Even if the DCO goes ahead RSP is unlikely to be able to raise the funding for a cargo airport. However there will be increasing political awareness that the land should be developed, particularly in view of the local economic deprivation.

@BonAbattoir @eastkentcarma I share your views. Maybe RSP misguidedly believes that by giving the airport project publicity it will increase the land values for industrial development/housing once it fails.

So what's the ultimate motive for the owners of the Manston airport site and the support from the local MPs? A cargo hub clearly would never be commercially viable. It's about creating publicity and political pressure with false promises of new jobs and investment in Thanet.

Not a good choice. There is a robust plan for developing the site as an aerospace hub, whilst maintaining its heritage and keeping it as an operational airfield. Let's hope this is just short-term.

An absolute shocker. What about the plans to at least preserve the areas of particular historic interest, such as the Dam Buster’s Heritage/Visitors Centre? Does the value of such tangible history mean nothing any more?

The proposed cargo hub is ultimately just a red herring in order to promote future land sales. It clearly fails to meet the DCO requirements in terms of need and climate change and should be rejected at the forthcoming Judicial Review.

In this way, perhaps they believe that they can more quickly sell off some of the land for so-called 'enabling' or other commercial/residential development despite the fact that the cargo hub is highly unlikely to ever be built.

Surely common sense will now prevail with the latest JR for the Manston airport development? There's no prospect of the cargo hub ever being commercially viable and climate change requirements would be even more challenging for the UK aviation sector. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan…
