Since arriving on April 24, ASPR’s Disaster Behavioral Health Support provided over 300 instances of psychological first aid and/or crisis counseling in response to Typhoon Sinlaku. Behind each number is a person navigating loss and uncertainty. And in each interaction, there is also a quiet reminder: even in the most difficult moments, support and hope are never out of reach.

Today we held a meeting with John Knox, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR), along with Sandra Carpio, Caribbean Area Office Director; Megan Hoffmann, Senior Advisor; Julie Oxner, Director of Legislative Affairs; and Jorge Rodríguez, Army War College Fellow, to strengthen coordination between Puerto Rico and the federal government in preparedness, response, and recovery efforts during emergencies. Together with Secretary of Health of Puerto Rico Dr. Víctor Ramos and Carlos J. Ríos, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Economic Development and Commerce, we discussed the resilience of our healthcare system, integration with emergency management, the strengthening of medical capabilities, and Puerto Rico’s strategic role in the United States pharmaceutical supply chain. - Hoy sostuvimos una reunión con John Knox, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary de la Administración para la Preparación y Respuesta Estratégica (ASPR), junto a Sandra Carpio, directora de la Oficina del Caribe; Megan Hoffmann, asesora senior; Julie Oxner, directora de Asuntos Legislativos; y Jorge Rodríguez, fellow del Army War College, para fortalecer la coordinación entre Puerto Rico y el gobierno federal en preparación, respuesta y recuperación ante emergencias. Schneider Regional Medical Center is building the systems and strengthening the coalitions needed to respond to threats caused by high consequence infectious diseases, hazardous chemicals, and natural disasters. This year, the Center received a Special Pathogen Treatment and Network Development (STAND) Award, providing it with the funding needed to become a Level 2 Special Pathogen Treatment Center. @HHS_ASPR Knox met with @SRMedicalCenter leaders to discuss building resilience in the U.S. Virgin Islands and across the region.

When Typhoon Sinlaku struck, responders from the National Disaster Medical System deployed. They provided emergency departments and critical care support by helping manage patient surge and supporting recovery efforts as the health care system came back online.

From assessment to action: ASPR is working with our territorial partners to assess healthcare systems in Gaum and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands after Typhoon Sinlaku. Early findings show staffing shortages and ED crowding in Saipan. An NDMS Health & Medical Task Force is now providing 24/7 ICU and ED support to sustain patient care.
