In office, under the Leadership of President Nana Addo and Ken Ofori Atta, you hosted a culinary event to celebrate the exit of the government of Ghana from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and today you are in opposition and criticizing the formal launch of the Free Primary Healthcare programme. Dear citizens, 🇬🇭 please support this Government to ensure the success of our beloved country.#actanonverba#reset
This morning, President John Dramani Mahama will together with the government and people of Ghana, launch the Free Primary Healthcare Program.
Ghana joins a host of other countries in the provision of Free Primary Healthcare for all. This intervention focuses on providing preventative health care services.
Key Aspects of Ghana's Free Primary Health Care:
1. Launch and Rollout: The programme is scheduled for launch in April 2026, starting with a phased implementation in 150 of 261 districts, specifically targeting underserved areas.
2. Services Covered: The policy covers routine screenings for diseases (diabetes, hypertension, cancer), antenatal and postnatal care, immunisations, and treatment for illnesses like malaria, diarrhoea, and respiratory infections.
3.Access Point: The policy operates at the Primary Health Care level, specifically through community-based health planning and services (CHPS) compounds, health centres, and polyclinics.
4.Eligibility: The policy requires only a valid national ID card to access services, regardless of prior National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) enrolment.
5. Financing: The government has allocated roughly 1.5 billion Ghana cedis for the initiative, which complements the existing NHIS to reduce out-of-pocket costs and reduce pressure on secondary hospitals.

In addition to the over 24,000 pieces of hospital equipment to be distributed to various health facilities across the country as part of the Free Primary Health Care Programme to be launched tomorrow, 350 Health Posts will be put up in public places such as bus stations, markets , schools among others, to make basic health care accessible to all including the 35% of Ghanaians who are not on the NHIS. I stepped out earlier today with the Minister for Health to see the beginning of the assembling of these fully-equiped Health Posts. This add on to existing health facilities and those under construction.
