Towards a National Sports Strategy for Lebanon: A Dialogue with Youth at the American University of Beirut Following the conference organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports under the patronage of President Joseph Aoun, in cooperation with the International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS), titled “Towards a National Sports Strategy for Lebanon,” the ministry held a large gathering with students at the American University of Beirut (AUB), under the patronage and in the presence of Minister of Youth and Sports Dr. Nora Bayrakdarian. The event was attended by Dr. Tarek Abou Omar representing the university, Dr. Jocelyn DeJong representing the Provost, and Dean of Student Affairs Nayla Al Akl. After welcoming remarks by Dr. Abou Omar, Minister Bayrakdarian delivered an address titled “Your Voice in the National Sports Strategy,” in which she highlighted the essential role of youth in shaping the strategy. The discussion was moderated by Massimiliano Montanari, CEO of the ICSS. Speakers included Former UK Minister for Sport Richard Caborn; Professor Laurent Vidal from Sorbonne University; Dr. Christos Anagnostopoulos, Professor and UNESCO Chair in Governance and Social Responsibility in Sport at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) in Qatar; Snezana Samardzic-Markovic, Minister of Youth and Sports of Serbia; and Minister Bayrakdarian. They shared insights from their experiences in the sports sector and in “community sports” initiatives, and exchanged ideas with students on enhancing community sports and reinforcing cooperation between schools, universities, NGOs, and local authorities. An open and lively discussion followed between students and the guests—especially Minister Bayrakdarian—focused on the practical role that young people, and university students in particular, can play in developing and implementing a national sports strategy. A questionnaire was distributed to students and its results analyzed, as the minister outlined the main goals of the strategy, notably promoting a transformative vision of sports that goes beyond competition to serve development and peace and act as a culture in itself. @AUB_Lebanon

As part of my commitment to fostering meaningful academic partnerships, I paid a field visit to the American University of Beirut (AUB), where I toured its state-of-the-art sports facilities, particularly the Charles Hostler Student Center. I was welcomed by Dr. Fares Dahdah, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and Dr. Tarek Abou Omar, Director of the Hostler Center, who accompanied me on an extensive tour of the center and its various departments. During the visit, I emphasized that the Ministry of Youth and Sports is currently implementing several initiatives in the fields of youth development, sports, and scouting, and that we are keen to establish a productive and lasting cooperation with leading academic institutions such as AUB, which plays a vital role in nurturing the potential of future generations. @AUB_Lebanon @fas_aub @AUBphoenix

Congrats to @MarcAnthonyIBR1 for being selected to receive the President’s Athletic Scholarship at AUB! Marc is a fierce Track&Field athlete who is ranked 55th worldwide. He holds two national records, the U23 Arab and the Mediterranean record in the 400m hurdles. Let’s go Marc!

Khuri, Provost Zaher Dawy, Vice President for Administration and Chief of Staff Mary Jaber, Dean of Students Nayla Al-Akl, Special Advisor to the President for Protocol and External Relations Ibrahim Khoury, and the Director of Charles Hostler Student Center Tarek Abou Omar.

We are happy to announce that Charbel Farah is the second athlete to receive the President’s Athletic Scholarship at AUB. The 19 years old is a fierce talent in the world of martial arts with a gold medal at the Asian championship and a bronze medal at the world championship.
