It is estimated there are upwards of 5,000 children with a parent in prison in Ireland on any given day with over 10,000 children affected each year. It is v important measures like this are also seen in the context of reducing the harm of imprisonment to children and families.
Irish Prison Service@IrishPrisons

Maintaining contact with families is an important part of the rehabilitation process. Covid-19 has impacted prisoners contact with families especially children. Providing phones in cells allows those in prison to talk to loved ones including their children at convenient times.

In Ep 1, Marty remembers being a young child realising there were places he wasn't welcome. Adventures with pals were often met with explicit instruction from guards to stay clear of the better off communities. An 'us and them' was created long before he ever committed a crime.

In episode 1 Anto, remembers school and how his dyslexia was neglected and judged. Years on, he is finding out that he has a great appetite for learning, teachers were wrong to use such terms, and things could have been different with the right supports.
