The weather is warming up here in Virginia and that means it’s time to update our wardrobes! Members of the Women’s Army Corps did just the same thing back in World War II when they would switch from their winter wool uniforms to their summer khakis.

Every March observes #WomensHistoryMonth. Flying combat missions during the Iraq War, receiving a Purple Heart, implementing programs to improve veteran trauma, and becoming a U.S. senator are some of the accomplishments of Lt. Col. Tammy Duckworth.

Did you know in the 1950’s there was a “WAC Irish Platoon?”  2LT Joanalys O’Bizzelle, Major Mary O’Sullivan, and Major Veronica O’Reilly created the platoon in honor of their Irish heritage. They marched under their shamrock guidon in a St. Patrick’s day parade on March 16, 1957.

On #PresidentsDay we remember President Truman who recognized the significant role of women in the military. During his presidency, he passed the Women's Armed Services Integration Act which made women’s branches permanent in the Armed Forces.

Yesterday was the 124th Birthday of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps! There were Army and Navy nurses stationed in the Philippines when the U. S. entered WWII. After the fall of Bataan and Corregidor, they were captured by the Japanese and imprisoned for over two years.

#BlackHistoryMonth honors the generational sacrifices and hardships of the Black community. This year, we spotlight Cathay Williams. She’s the only known female Buffalo soldier, disguising herself as a man and going by the alias, William Cathay, in order to serve.
