Donald Trump has voted to make Daylight Savings Time the permanent time in the USA. A stupid move as now the time is always 1 hour less than it should be, when he could have fixed it on Standard Time instead. Now you have to do your duels at 1pm not High Noon.

Best analysis I've read so far.
Бианка@BiankaB12

To understand Russia, you have to think like a Russian. Analysing it through a Western lens will only take you so far. 1) Russia no longer wants this war, but it cannot simply stop it. Because…Pride. A self-declared “great power” cannot admit defeat - especially not against a country it regards as smaller, weaker and fundamentally inferior. Withdrawal would not merely be seen as a military failure, but as a humiliation and a collapse of Russia’s entire imperial self-image. 2) Russian leadership operates like a mafia hierarchy, built around strongman culture. If Putin retreats, it will be interpreted as weakness. He will be cannibalised by the very structure he created. Remember - this is a man obsessed with longevity, who has directed his own daughters towards scientific research and poured enormous resources into extending his own life. He is terrified of death! He will not voluntarily choose an outcome that could threaten his personal survival. 3) Russia has already paid an enormous demographic and economic price. More than one million Russians - including a disproportionate share of the educated, urban and technically skilled population - have left the country since 2022. Another estimated 1.4 million have been killed, wounded or permanently disabled from the war. The economy is under severe strain. Inflation is high. Russians queue for hours - and in some cases days - for fuel. Farmers are warning that shortages of diesel and fertiliser could severely disrupt agricultural production, raising the risk of food shortages. 4) Russia is also terrified of what happens when the soldiers come home. Sex workers in Russia have reportedly described a mass exodus from the industry because returning veterans are exceptionally violent, cruel and sadistic. The Kremlin has been explicit that it does not want to repeat the aftermath of the Soviet war in Afghanistan, when half a million soldiers returned from a failed war to a collapsing country. Many came home traumatised, brutalised and unable to reintegrate. Organised crime, addiction and social violence surged. Russia cannot simply stop this war. What it can do is: 1) Continue the war of attrition and keep losing slowly to Ukraine - at an enormous cost to Ukrainians as well. 2) Intensify its cognitive and political warfare - deepen divisions within Europe, drive a wedge between the EU and the United States, and help bring more Russia-friendly governments to power. governments willing to abandon Ukraine or pressure Kyiv into accepting an unfavourable settlement. 3) Beg Trump to negotiate some form of Korean-style stalemate: a frozen front that gives Russia several years to rebuild its forces, rearm and resume the war later. 4) As an absolute last resort, escalate by attacking the NATO alliance - triggering a conventional war that they lose quickly. Then, and only then, they can say: look, we lost, but we fought the ENTIRE West. Russia cannot win this war. But it cannot stop it either - not through any conventional or politically survivable route anyway. P.S.: No, nukes are not an option either.

Better team, better tactics. You don't need the best players to win. Not to denigrate the Spanish individual qualities, but everyone who was convinced that France was unbeatable shall eat humble pie and hand over their cash. #fraesp #topofthepoule

Vanaf wanneer?

@eeldenden Maybe start by integrating between Belgians and Belgians? It's all going to be downhill from there. 😉

If Europe can integrate millions of people from Africa and Asia, why would creating a Federal Europe between Belgians and Italians be impossible because of "differences"? If anything, it would be easier

I am the Head of Engagement Design at Meta, and this week the European Union looked at my life's work and called it addictive. They are going to fine us up to 6 percent of everything the company earns on Earth. I built a page with no bottom. That is the whole job, and I am good at it. Let me tell you what addictive design is, since they finally said the word out loud. You open the app to check one thing. There is no one thing. There is a feed, and the feed does not end, because I removed the end. A page used to have a bottom. I took the bottom out in a two-week sprint, we shipped it, the number that measures how long you stay went up, and it has never come down, and neither have you. We do not call it addiction. We call it engagement. Engagement is a warm word. It is what you do at a wedding. I measure it in dwell time, in the half-second your thumb hovers before it scrolls, in the five-second view that counts as watched. I know your thumb better than you do. I have a chart of your thumb. The Europeans have a phrase for the state I sell. They call it autopilot. It is the moment you are scrolling and you did not decide to scroll, the reel after the reel after the reel, the hour you cannot account for. Autopilot is the product. I ship it one reel at a time. You never were the pilot. That seat was never installed. Years ago my company stood on a stage and promised you time well spent. Meaningful social interactions. We meant it the way a casino means "enjoy your stay." We kept the phrase and kept the machine, and we put a little screen-time reminder inside the machine, a soft gray button you can dismiss with the same thumb I already own, and we called that care. The autoplay starts the next video before you choose it, because choosing is a moment of friction, and friction is where you leave. The notification is a leash with a sound, and I hold the other end. And the recommender shows you what keeps you, which is a different thing from what you like, and that difference is the whole company. Now Brussels wants me to put the bottom back on the page. Turn autoplay off unless you ask for it. Give you a break you cannot wave away with your thumb. They call these remedies. I call them the features I was paid, for years, to make sure you never found. They say addictive design like it is an accusation. It is a job description. It is mine. And the fine is 6 percent, which is a number I can live with, because the other 94 is the evening you were never going to get back.

Sorry, but anyone who seriously believes that a sanctioned Russian oligarch from the Kremlin’s inner circle, and one of the biggest beneficiaries of Russia’s war against Ukraine, decided on his own, without the Kremlin’s approval, to publish an article in a Western outlet because he’s some courageous free thinker who genuinely just wants “change” and “respect” for Russia simply does not understand Russia. The desire to find a hero who will “come and fix everything” is extraordinarily naïve.

Ik denk eg dat Oekraïne geen jaar nodig zal hebben om Patriots van de band te laten rollen. Ik heb een donkerbruin vermoeden dat het project al lang in de steigers staat en dat het wachten alleen nog was op de officiële licentie. #Icouldbewrong
