Did giant armored mammals have fleas? At the recent WAVP conference, AZMNH Chief Curator Dr. Robert McCord presented new findings on parasite traces found in fossil glyptodonts. These ichnites, possibly left by tungid fleas, reveal new details about the lives of Ice Age mammals. Fossils from Arizona’s 111 Ranch suggest that some North American glyptodonts hosted these parasites, offering valuable insight into ancient ecosystems.

A little light paleontological reading for your weekend. The question of whether an animal was a quadruped or a biped may not be so easy to answer. Researchers believe this ancient animal switched it up as it moved into adulthood. At AZMNH, you'll find examples of crocodile relatives. How different are they from the modern version? my.mesaaz.gov/4ulXEhd

With so many amazing exhibits, objects, and fossils, AZMNH is a great space to practice your photography skills. You don't have to hide behind a bush to capture a great shot of our animals, and they will never run away! Recently, the Leisure World Photography Club used AZMNH as the backdrop for their photography scavenger hunt. Take a look at some of the photos they took my.mesaaz.gov/4r9E1pZ.

Recently, Dr. Ismael joined a field trip to the archaeological site of Ventana Cave in the Tohono O'odham Nation. Ventana Cave is a significant place for multiple reasons: it preserves evidence of continuous occupation of the region by the ancestors of the O'odham during the last 10 thousand years, and it is a sacred landmark for the modern Tohono O'odham community. During the visit Dr. Ismael had the opportunity to discuss with his colleagues the archaeological and cultural significance of this site. The field trip was organized by the Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society, led by members of the Tohono O'odham Nation, and included colleagues from the Himdag Ki: Cultural Center and Museum and the University of Arizona.

A little light anthropological reading for your weekend. AZMNH Curator of Anthropology, Dr. Ismael Sanchez-Morales, recently had a paper published in Glyphs, the monthly journal of the Arizona Archeological and Historical Society. It is a short paper on his analysis of Archaic projectile points from the sites of El Fin del Mundo and El Gramal. Thanks to a Research Grant from AAHS, Dr. Ismael spent time in Sonora last May working on this project. my.mesaaz.gov/4rqpHts
