Thomas wiped his face. He picked up his shovel. He turned around and walked off the pile. He didn't fill out a report. He didn't stop at the command post to register his name. He didn't want a medal. He walked back to his car, covered in ash, and drove home. He didn't wear the uniform for the authority. He wore it so the people buried in the dark would know someone was coming. For five years, Jimeno and McLoughlin searched for the unknown Marine who found them. When Hollywood made a movie about the rescue in 2006, the studio cast a white actor to play him. The filmmakers simply didn't know who he was. The identity of the man on the pile was a blank space in the historical record. Jason Thomas, a Black man from New York, was living in Ohio, working as a court officer. He had never told his coworkers what he did that day. He saw a commercial for the movie. He quietly watched his own rescue reconstructed on a television screen. A coworker eventually urged him to step forward. He finally confirmed his identity to a reporter. The two Port Authority officers are still alive today. The desert camouflage uniform Thomas wore that afternoon is still hanging in a closet in his home, the fabric permanently stained by a gray dust that never fully washed out..

On September 11, 2001, two men were buried alive under the rubble of the World Trade Center. The man walking above them had no radio, no official orders, and no authority to be there. His name was Jason Thomas. He was twenty-seven years old, a former United States Marine, studying criminal justice and raising a young daughter. He watched the second plane hit on television. He drove his daughter to his mother’s house. He did not say exactly where he was going. He drove back to his apartment, opened a trunk, and pulled out his desert camouflage uniform. He had no active duty orders. He had no authority to deploy himself. The bridges into the city were closing to civilian traffic. The police were turning cars around. Thomas bypassed the checkpoints. He drove his car into Manhattan, parked it wherever he could find space, and grabbed an infantry shovel and a flashlight. He walked toward the sixteen acres of smoking steel. The air smelled of pulverized concrete, jet fuel, and melting plastic. The ash was three inches thick on the pavement. Papers from office desks fluttered down like snow onto the wreckage. It was late afternoon. He walked into the center of Ground Zero. He saw another man wearing a Marine uniform. It was Staff Sergeant Dave Karnes. Karnes had been working as an accountant in Connecticut that morning. He had left his desk, gotten a haircut, put on his old uniform, and driven to the city. They did not know each other. They did not ask for credentials. They looked at each other’s uniforms, nodded, and began climbing the debris field. At the time, official emergency protocols dictated that all personnel pull back from the immediate pile. Building 7 was on the verge of total collapse. The fires underneath the steel were burning at nearly 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Spontaneous, unauthorized entry was strictly prohibited. Thomas and Karnes ignored the perimeter. They climbed over the jagged steel beams. They walked past the twisted, crushed fire engines. They carried no heavy excavation equipment. They had flashlights, ropes, and the infantry shovel. They shouted into the smoke. Silence. They climbed higher, to a section where the concourse had been, and shouted again. “United States Marines! If you can hear us, yell or tap!” Deep inside an elevator shaft, twenty feet below the surface, Will Jimeno and John McLoughlin were pinned under a massive slab of concrete. They were September 11 first responders who had been running toward the evacuation routes when the South Tower came down on top of them. They had been in the dark for hours. They were injured, in excruciating pain, and waiting for the fires to reach them. They heard a voice calling from the surface. Jimeno yelled back. Thomas heard the faint sound. He stopped. He dropped to his knees on the burning steel and shined his flashlight down through a small gap in the wreckage. He couldn't see the bottom. The smoke was too thick. He yelled down to them. He told them he was Jason Thomas, a Marine, and that they were not going to leave them in the dark. He took out his infantry shovel. He started digging through the concrete and steel by hand. It was an entirely useless tool against the massive I-beams, but he kept moving the smaller pieces of debris to widen the gap. He stayed at the hole. He kept talking to Jimeno and McLoughlin to keep them awake and focused. It took hours for the spspecializedescue teams to arrive from the city with cutting torches and hydraulic tools. Thomas stayed on the pile. He crawled into the opening to help pass equipment down to the NYPD Emergency Service Unit officers who were performing the extraction. He guided the medics. The extraction was agonizing. The steel had to be cut precisely to avoid crushing the men further. They pulled Jimeno out first. Hours later, the next morning, they pulled McLoughlin out. The medics strapped the men to backboards and carried them away. The operation was over. (More story in replies)
