Can someone please listen to what this guy is saying?
The first clip is his post-match interview after the win against Norway. You can clearly tell he wasn't happy with the performance. He repeatedly says that, as a football coach, he believes England could and should have played much better. He keeps emphasizing that despite winning.
Now compare that to the second interview. England lose to Argentina, yet he says he was happy with the way his team played. What?
He claims Argentina had nothing to lose and that England never found their rhythm again. But let's talk about the decisions that actually changed the game.
After England took the lead, he substituted Anthony Gordon—the goalscorer—for a centre-back and spent almost the entire second half defending a one-goal lead. Meanwhile, Argentina took off a defender, brought on Lautaro Martínez, and finished the match with four attackers. England had huge opportunities to punish that risk on the counterattack, but they never even tried.
What's frustrating is the complete contradiction. He's unhappy after beating Norway, but satisfied after losing a World Cup semifinal. His tactical decisions invited constant pressure and, in my opinion, were the biggest reason England were eliminated.
What makes it even harder to understand is how calm he sounds, as if nothing significant happened. He has often spoken about how much he loves living in England, yet when he finally had the opportunity to take this incredibly talented squad to a World Cup final, he threw it away with overly cautious tactics.
England deserve better than this. With the quality of players they have, settling for a manager who plays not to lose instead of playing to win is a huge waste.
