This is a very thorough study of how diplomacy helped the British conquer India: on how the British envoys (the Residents) acquired information about the Indian courts, how they interfered in courtly politics and, eventually, helped dismantle a number of Indian kingdoms.

"Lighting is everything" -Kim Jong II, 1973 Those of you arguing about Dhar vs Ray need to discover the true genius of Dear Leader, the world's greatest film maker. From directing propaganda films to owning a complete library of every Hollywood film ever produced to kidnapping leading South Korean actors/directors to winning International awards, Dear Leader could go to the ends of the earth for a quality production. Published almost 20 years ago, the book "A Kim Jong Il Production" provides an intimate view of life at Dear Leader's court and North Korean cinema. Highly recommended read!

The first recipient of the Iron Cross and 'the only man in Prussia,' according to Napoleon: Queen Louise of Prussia was a legendary figure who changed the course of history. It's her 250th birthday this week. ZEITGEIST on her short life and long legacy 👇 katjahoyer.uk/p/louise-life-…

@RupakChatto Reckless and stupid to endanger his crew. He should be courtmartialled if he is rescued and alive.

What it does is to underscrore the reckless actions of IRIS Dena's captain. Once you have sought internment in a neutral port due to hostilities, you should expect to be intercepted by an enemy force if you decide to transit through international waters to a third destination. The analogy would be Captain Langsdorff trying to undertake a diplomatic mission to Buneos Aries from Montevideo with three British cursiers in La Plata. The captains of the IRIS Bushehr and IRIS Lavan took the more responsible course of action and got their ships to internment in a neutral port.
Bashir Ali Abbas🇮🇳🇵🇸@BashirAliAbbas

Nonsense. India fulfilled all its legal obligations and more (which the article also cements). But it conveniently misses the point that the IRIS Dena had embarked on a second diplomatic mission - for a courtesy visit to Sri Lanka, on Colombo’s invitation (later rescinded).

Faced with a superior British force, in December 1939 Captain Langsdorff of the Graf Spee was unwilling to risk the lives of his crew, so he decided to scuttle the ship. On 17 December, the ship, with only Langsdorff and 40 other men aboard, moved into the outer roadstead from Montevideo. The scuttling charges were set, the crew was taken off by an Argentine tug. In the aftermath of the scuttling, the ship's crew were taken to Argentina, where they were interned for the remainder of the war. Langsdorff would commit suicide but had the crew's welfare top of mind.

Nobody will buy India's "guest is god" philosophy. Next time we host a multilateral military exercise, any country that isn't in America's good books will think twice before attending. Lawde ka regional power, IOR.

@RupakChatto @IndicMeenakshi It would be interesting to compare the incidence with witch burning, adjusted for population. The Holy Roman Empire saw about 30,000++ witch burning between the mid 1600s and 1700s. The HRE had a population of 20-22 million during this period. So the prevalence appears similar.

@IndicMeenakshi never claimed that the British invented Sati. She argues that they exaggerated its prevalence. She also argues that it was largely limited to elite landowning families. The EIC estimated ~8,000 cases between 1815 and 1830 in the Bengal Presidency (not all verified). During this period the Presidency had a population of 35-40 million. To put the scale into context in 2022, Canada suffered 874 homicides.
Samyak Ghosh 🌈@GhoshSamyak

@sourdopinions Meenakshi Jain’s scholarship reifies nationalist historiography. Her claim that Sati was invented by the British is completely false. Please look at Lata Mani’s book on this. I haven’t read Jain’s recent book.

Konrad Adenauer, Germany's first post-war chancellor, has become a legendary figure in collective memory. For his 150th birthday, coverage was exuberant and decidedly uncritical. This wasn't always so. ZEITGEIST on Adenauer and nostalgia for West Germany👇 katjahoyer.uk/p/man-and-myth…

In May 1989, Deng's designated successor Zhao Ziyang (d. 2005), then General Secretary of the CPC fell from grace and spent the rest of his life under house arrest for refusing to use force to put down student protests at Tainanmen Square. Deng would overrule him and declare martial law "two hundred dead could bring 20 years of peace to China". The book presents his side of the events and servers as a memoir. It is based on a series of about thirty audio tapes recorded secretly by Zhao in 1999/2000 while he was under house arrest. A must read for anyone interested in the understanding the evolution of politics and power in China.

My doctoral thesis included a detailed study of the Great Leap Famine, some years before the publication of Yang Jisheng's definitive work in English. I wish I had access to it when I was writing Drawing on primary material and his own lived experience (his father was a victim) this is a must read for anyone wanting to understand China's post 1949 political journey.

This is one of my favourite biographies I think, purely because it made me recongise Blucher's efforts, especially at Waterloo. The Prussian march to the battle is something that really deserves more credit
